Tony Packer, Packer’s father, competed for St. Lawrence University in three sports — football, basketball, and baseball — during his time there as an athlete. His father was honored with entry into the University’s Hall of Fame in the year 1982. Additionally, his father served as the head coach of the men’s basketball team at Lehigh University for many years.
In Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Billy received his diploma from the Liberty High School. After that, he completed his education at Forest University in Winston-Salem, which is located in North Carolina. During his last three years of school, he was a member of the school’s basketball team and played the position of guard for the squad. After completing his education, Billy started working for his alma institution as an assistant coach.
In 1972, Billy Packer relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina, to pursue a new career in the field of radio. After that, he was invited to step in as a color commentator for an ACC game that was being shown locally on television. The season after that, he started working as a regular commentator.
