In 1992, Bola Tinubu was elected to the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing the Lagos West constituency. He served in the Senate until 1993 when the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida dissolved all political offices in the country.

After the return to democracy in 1999, Bola Tinubu was elected as the Governor of Lagos State, a position he held for two terms, from 1999 to 2007.
