Tony Elumelu received his primary and secondary education in Nigeria before attending Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics in 1985. He later obtained a Master of Science in economics from the University of Lagos in 1986.

Elumelu’s career started at Allstates Trust Bank, where he worked for several years before moving to Standard Trust Bank in 1997. He rose through the ranks to become the bank’s CEO in 1999. In 2005, he engineered the merger between Standard Trust Bank and United Bank for Africa (UBA), becoming the CEO of the newly merged entity.
In 2010, Elumelu retired from UBA and founded Heirs Holdings, a family-owned investment company focusing on power, oil and gas, financial services, hospitality, and real estate. He also founded the Tony Elumelu Foundation, committed to empowering African entrepreneurs and promoting entrepreneurship on the continent.
Elumelu has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including being named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2015. He is also a member of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (OFR).
